What Is Somatic Healing And How Can It Help You?

If you've been googling "somatic therapy," "body-based healing," or "why do I feel stuck even though I've done so much inner work" — you're in the right place.

Somatic healing is one of the most powerful and least understood approaches to emotional and psychological wellbeing. In this post I'm going to break down what it actually is, how it works, and whether it might be the missing piece in your own healing journey.

How I Found Somatic Healing.

I didn't come to this work through a textbook. I came to it through my own breaking point.

Ten years ago you wouldn't have caught me trying anything like somatic healing. I was living in London, working a successful corporate job, travelling constantly, and by most measures living the life everyone wants. But underneath the surface, my body was sending increasingly loud signals that something was very wrong — panic attacks, chronic anxiety, sleepless nights, joint inflammation, gut issues, constant exhaustion.

I kept pushing through until one morning my body simply shut down and I couldn't anymore.

What followed was years of doing the work — psychology, energy healing, breathwork, yoga, meditation, shamanic work, EMDR, Traditional Chinese Medicine, you name it. I was searching for someone who could fix me. What I eventually discovered was that there was no fixing to be done, because I wasn't broken. What I needed was to learn how to listen to my own body — to feel what I'd spent years running from, and to release what had accumulated in my nervous system along the way.

Somatic healing was the piece that reached places nothing else could. Not because it's magical, but because it works with the body directly — and that's where the unresolved material actually lives, in the tissues of your body.

I share this because if you're here reading this, you might recognise something of your own experience in mine. The exhaustion. The sense that you've tried to understand yourself but something deeper still feels stuck. The feeling that your body is trying to tell you something you haven't quite been able to hear yet.

That's exactly where this work begins.

So, What Is Somatic Healing?

The word soma comes from the Greek word for "the body living in wholeness." Somatic healing, then, is a body-centred approach to restoring that wholeness.

Unlike traditional talk therapy, which focuses primarily on understanding experiences through thought and language, somatic healing works with the body itself — with movement, breath, sensation, and the felt experience of being alive in your own skin.

The foundational principle is simple but profound: the body holds what the mind hasn't yet been able to process.

As trauma researcher and psychiatrist Bessel van der Kolk put it: "Neuroscience research shows that the only way we can change the way we feel is by becoming aware of our inner experience and learning to befriend what is going on inside ourselves."

This is the heart of somatic work. Not analysing what happened, but learning to listen to what the body is still carrying.

Why Does the Body Hold Trauma?

When we experience stress, fear, overwhelm, or trauma, the body responds automatically — flooding with adrenaline, tensing muscles, bracing for impact. This is the nervous system doing exactly what it's designed to do: protect you.

But when those stress responses don't get to complete — when the threat passes but the body never fully discharged the activation — that energy becomes stored in the tissues, the muscles, the fascia, and the nervous system patterns we carry into daily life.

Over time, this shows up as:

  • Chronic tension, aches, or physical symptoms without a clear cause

  • Anxiety, stress, or a persistent feeling of being on edge

  • Emotional numbness or feeling disconnected from yourself

  • Repeating relationship patterns or self-sabotaging behaviours

  • Feeling stuck despite years of therapy, personal development, or spiritual work

Sound familiar? You're far from alone.

How Is Somatic Therapy Different From Regular Therapy?

Many people arrive at somatic healing after doing significant amounts of talk therapy, coaching, or self-development work. They have insight. They understand why they feel the way they feel. And yet something in the body — some deeper layer of experience — remains unchanged.

This is because insight alone, while valuable, doesn't reach the places where stress and emotion are physically held. The nervous system doesn't speak in language. It speaks in sensation, impulse, and movement.

Somatic therapy works directly with this layer. Rather than talking about an experience, we work with what the body is feeling right now — noticing sensations, following impulses, using breath and movement to gently bring stored energy to the surface so it can finally be released.

As Peter Levine, the founder of Somatic Experiencing, understood: trauma is stored in the body — and so is the key to healing it.

What Happens in a Somatic Healing Session?

Every session at The Liminal Space Wellness is tailored to you — your nervous system, your readiness, and what your body is presenting in that moment.

Sessions draw on a range of body-centred tools including somatic trauma therapy techniques, breathwork, energy healing, movement, and nervous system regulation practices. Rather than following a fixed formula, the session responds to you.

You don't need to share your full story, relive past experiences, or push through anything that doesn't feel right. The pace is always yours. Your boundaries and nervous system are always honoured.

What many clients notice is that the body begins to release things the mind couldn't access on its own — emotions, memories, physical tension, and old protective patterns that have been quietly running in the background for years. Suddenly, you create space to live from a more aligned place.

What Can Somatic Healing Help With?

Somatic and body-based healing can support a wide range of experiences, including:

  • Anxiety and chronic stress — regulating a nervous system that is stuck in patterns of fight, flight, or freeze

  • Trauma and PTSD — releasing stored trauma energy from the body gently and at your own pace

  • Burnout and exhaustion — restoring connection to the body after prolonged depletion

  • Depression and emotional numbness — reconnecting with feeling, aliveness, and joy

  • Low self-worth and people pleasing — healing the patterns formed in early life that keep you small

  • Feeling stuck — shifting what insight, willpower, and analysis haven't been able to move

  • Grief and loss — processing what the body holds when the heart has been broken

  • Spiritual growth and self-discovery — deepening connection to your intuition, truth, and authentic self

This work is particularly powerful for people who have already done therapy or personal development work and sense there is still something deeper asking to be reached.

Is Somatic Healing Right for You?

This work is best suited to people who:

  • Feel ready to take an active role in their own wellbeing

  • Are open to exploring emotions and body awareness

  • Are seeking gradual, integrative, lasting change rather than a quick fix

  • Are curious about what lies beneath the surface of their patterns and behaviours

You don't need any prior experience with somatic work, breathwork, energy healing, or meditation. You just need an open mind and a willingness to listen inward.
